This custom home in La Jolla, California was the 2004 Home of the Year for San Diego Home/Garden Magazine. A contemporary version of the traditional mexican hacienda, the architect worked to incorporate vivid colors into the project while keeping the exterior understated and dignified.

Description

In 1968 the California State Department of Transportation (CalTrans) began acquiring property to build a freeway through a neighborhood that did not want one; the tightly-knit community of Southcrest in southeastern San Diego. In response, the community rallied together and after 17 years of protest, they were finally able to defeat the proposal, but not before the damage was done—280 homes on 66 acres were demolished, effectively destroying an entire section of the Southcrest neighborhood.

Description

Aspen Creek is located in the City of Beaumont in Riverside County and consists of 106 single-family detached homes ranging from 2,115 to 2,808 square feet. With three distinct plan types designed by Rodriquez Associates Architects and Planners Inc., Aspen Creek offered numerous floor plan options characterized by spare bedrooms, retreats, lofts, dens and customizable garage spaces. Coordination between the design and construction team was critical as vertical construction was phased into 12 separate phases and Aspen Creek serves as an excellent example of the project team’s ability to meet the schedules and budgets set forth in larger phase planned unit development projects.
